Lapwing

Colorful Lapwing on Dutch Pasture

The lapwing is a common migratory bird in the Dutch polderlandscape. When temperatures rise above zero, it returns from Africa and feeds worms and snails from the unfrozen soil. In the sunlight the green yellow colors of the feather are reflecting.

Making of:
The winter 2013 was long and cold and only mid March when temperatures slowly increased the Lapwing returned.
At the edge of the town Rijpwetering I saw a group of just returned Lapwings on my way home. Perhaps weakened by the journey they were not very shy and I could get quite close. The photo was made from hand with a exposure > 1/1000 at 300 mm with Nikon 300s.
