The Rajaji Nationalpark lies in the north of India at a tributary of the river Ganges and at the point where the lowlands end and the Himalayan mountains range is just beginning. It is home to various species of deer. In this picture two male axis deer can be seen, a young one with small antlers and an older one that is descending on the path. As opposed to the fallow deer, which is spotted, too, the axis deer has no shovel (or palmated) antlers.
Making of: The photo was made on a 3 hour tour by jeep with a local ranger. The axis deer came from a bigger group in a clearing. They were escaping the jeep, but only slowly and it was easy for the car to get close. I selected the photo among others because it captured also the sphere of the park environment very well, with its sandy tracks and shrublands.
