The Diaethria clymena janeira rests on a metal railing. Its striking 88 pattern is visible at the boundary of the waterfalls in Iguacu. It is not aware of it representing a number. Rather the pattern serves probably to attract partners or to distract birds by false eyes.
Making of: The picture was shot at a the waterfalls of Iguacu, where this butterfly species is very abundant. Here, a constant drizzle of water is raining down. It is thus more convenient to sit than to fly. This individual was quite tame. It was possible to get very close.
